Meet Bold – Young Male Umbrella Cockatoo

At 10 months old, Bold is still a young Umbrella Cockatoo with plenty of opportunity for his new family to continue building his training and socialization.

He is described as hand tamed, cage trained and fully weaned, giving his new owner a foundation for continued handling and positive training.

Young Umbrella Cockatoos are intelligent and naturally curious. They benefit from structured routines, supervised exploration, foraging activities, safe chewing opportunities and regular interaction. Their development should include learning to play independently rather than relying exclusively on constant human attention.

Umbrella Cockatoo Temperament

Umbrella Cockatoos are known for their intelligence, strong social nature and affectionate relationships with people. They can be engaging and interactive companion birds when their physical, social and mental needs are properly met.

They are also very vocal and demanding birds, so prospective owners should understand that an Umbrella Cockatoo is not a quiet companion. Consistent enrichment and daily interaction are important because insufficient stimulation can contribute to behavioral problems such as excessive vocalization and feather-destructive behavior.

Bold’s individual personality should be considered separately from general species characteristics. Contact Exotic Parrots Aviary for additional information about his current behavior, handling routine and preferences.

Bold’s Personality & Training

Bold is offered as a young male Umbrella Cockatoo with hand-taming and cage training already established.

His new family can continue developing these skills through:

• Positive-reinforcement training
• Step-up and recall exercises
• Gentle daily handling
• Supervised out-of-cage activity
• Foraging games
• Puzzle toys
• Bird-safe chewing materials
• Short, consistent training sessions

Umbrella Cockatoos are intelligent birds that benefit from activities requiring them to explore, manipulate objects and solve simple problems.

Diet & Nutrition

Bold is fully weaned and can continue on a balanced diet appropriate for an Umbrella Cockatoo.

A quality formulated pellet can form the nutritional foundation, supplemented with a variety of suitable fresh vegetables and greens, with fruit and calorie-dense treats provided appropriately. Seeds and nuts should be offered in controlled amounts rather than becoming the main component of the diet.

Suggested Diet

• Quality formulated pellets for large parrots
• Fresh vegetables and leafy greens
• Suitable fresh fruit in moderation
• Controlled amounts of appropriate seeds and nuts
• Suitable enrichment foods for foraging
• Fresh, clean drinking water every day

Any dietary transition should be gradual, and an avian veterinarian can provide guidance based on Bold’s individual nutritional needs.

Cage Training & Housing

Bold is cage trained, but Umbrella Cockatoos require a large, sturdy and secure enclosure with enough room to climb, stretch and move comfortably.

The enclosure should include strong perches, bird-safe toys and plenty of destructible enrichment. Cockatoos have powerful beaks and naturally enjoy chewing, so appropriate chew toys and natural materials should be available regularly.

A cage should not be viewed as the bird’s only source of activity. Safe, supervised out-of-cage exercise and interaction are important components of responsible Umbrella Cockatoo care.

Health & DNA Testing

Bold is offered in good health and is DNA tested.

DNA testing is useful for confirming sex, while an avian veterinary examination is the appropriate way to evaluate an individual bird’s current health.

We recommend that Bold’s new owner establish a relationship with an avian veterinarian and arrange an examination after acquisition. Any available DNA documentation, health records and applicable paperwork can be discussed with prospective buyers.

Why Choose an Umbrella Cockatoo?

The White Umbrella Cockatoo is one of the most recognizable cockatoos, with brilliant white plumage and a dramatic crest that opens into an umbrella-like fan when the bird is excited or alert. The species is highly intelligent and social, which can make it an engaging companion for an owner prepared for its substantial care requirements.

However, ownership requires a serious long-term commitment. Umbrella Cockatoos can live for decades and require appropriate nutrition, veterinary care, substantial enrichment, social interaction and spacious housing.

Is Bold Right for Your Home?

Bold may be suitable for a committed and experienced parrot home that understands the responsibilities associated with owning a large cockatoo.

Prospective owners should be comfortable with:

• Significant daily interaction
• Normal cockatoo vocalizations
• Regular cage cleaning
• Frequent toy and enrichment rotation
• A large, secure enclosure
• Routine avian veterinary care
• A long-term commitment to the bird’s welfare

Understanding these requirements before purchase helps ensure that Bold is placed in an appropriate environment.
